  • 1 cup spring water
  • 2 inches ginger root
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • pinch ground black pepper
  • 1 tbsp 1 raw local honey or a few drops of stevia

  • Peel the ginger root and cut to thin slices.

Ginger has a long history of traditional use as a natural remedy to treat respiratory illnesses. Modern science was able to validate this use in respiratory disorders. According to research, ginger can reduce allergic airway inflammation [1].

In fact, the researchers found that certain active components of ginger have a natural ability to suppress allergic reactions. As a result, they concluded that ginger may help to treat and prevent allergic diseases. [2].

Additional studies proposed ginger as a possible therapeutic application in allergic asthma. According to the data, [6]-gingerol, a major constituent of ginger, can prevent immune responses that lead to airway inflammation. [3].

Some research data also suggests that 6-Shogaol, an active constituent of ginger, may be useful as a chemopreventive agent against certain types of lung cancer. [4].


Turmeric Lung Cleansing Tea

Cinnamon does have a long traditional use for respiratory issues. In the medical community, however, there is not enough evidence to support this use.

As for the traditional use of cinnamon to cleanse the lungs, what we do know is that the Romans used cinnamon to treat digestive and respiratory tract issues [14]. We also see this use in the Ayurvedic medicine, with many remedies that include cinnamon to treat respiratory, digestive and gynaecological ailments [15].

The Coconut – Golden Milk Lung Cleansing Recipe

As you can guess, this version of the lung cleansing tea is very popular. The original version does taste great. When you replace the 1 cup of water with 1 cup of pure coconut milk, however, the taste,texture and overall feel you get are simply amazing.

To make the coconut golden milk lung cleansing recipe follow the same directions as the original recipe. The only differences:

  • Use 1 cup of pure coconut milk instead of the water.
  • Heat the coconut milk with the ingredients on medium heat. Do not bring to boil.
  • All the other directions stay the same.

This use of natural fats together with tumeric is a known ayurvedic principle we see in the authentic golden milk recipe. This use may help to improve the absorption and/or bioavailiblity of curcumuin in the body. Another benefit that some people report, is better sleep.

If you are lucky enough and can get fresh pineapple at your local store, you can replace the orange juice with pineapple. Use 1 cup of pineapple chunks in this juice recipe.

Watermelon: Is it good for your kidneys?

Many kidney cleanse juice recipes like to add watermelon and melon. In our opinion however, it is much better to eat then.

The main reason is due to their high water (92%) and sugar content. They are very hydrating, fast absorbing and sweet on their own. Just like nature intended. So, if you like to eat watermelons or melons, continue to do so. Use the fruits you do not always like to eat for juices.

Parsley & Cilantro

Parsley and cilantro are known kidney cleanse herbs. They do not however, taste great in juice or smoothies.

The lemon juice cleanse drink is based on the famous ancient ayurvedic practice of drinking lemon juice in warm water on an empty stomach. This simple recipe can help to stimulate digestion and detox the body.

To make the lemon juice cleanse drink, squeeze the juice of ½ organic lemon into 16 ounces of warm spring or alkaline water. You can also add a few drops of stevia to sweeten the drink if needed.

Many people find it helpful to make more servings and drink more in the morning and throughout the day.

Update: An Important Note about Protein & Cleansing

You may have noticed that the 3 Day Juice Cleanse is low in protein.

We have been getting many questions and concerns about this topic.
Is it OK to be on a low protein during a cleanse?

If you plan to follow the cleanse for just a few days, such as this 3 day plan, then, the answer is: yes, it is OK.

On the other hand, many people make this mistake of doing a juice cleanse or other low protein diets for several weeks. For most people, this is NOT recommended for the following reasons:

  • Tissue repair: If you don’t eat enough protein, your body may lack amino acids needed to repair its tissues. Think about your muscles, skin, hair, nails, organs, even your bones! They are all made our of protein and need enough amino acids. Just to give you an idea, 50% of your bones are made of protein.
  • Enzymes & Hormones: Other than tissue repair, amino acids are essential in order to support your brain, enzymatic and hormonal systems. For example, different amino acids are needed for healthy libido, mood, sleep, and memory.
  • Detoxification: Lastly, certain amino acids play a key role in detoxification. So, if you go too low, you may be at a risk for impaired detoxification. Exactly the opposite what you are trying to achieve!

Protein options for cleansing and low protein diets

If for some reason you need to go on a longer cleanse or a low protein diet, or if you suspect your body doesn’t digest protein very well, you may want to add essential amino acids (EAA) into your diet.

Protein options for juice cleansing and low protein diets

  • 1 oz whole flax seeds
  • 1 oz hemp seeds
  • 1 oz almonds
  • 1 cup pure unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 tbsp coconut butter
  • 1/2 cup water
  • pinch himalayan pink salt
  • pinch ground black pepper optional
  • ¼ tsp ground chipotle powder optional

Veggies (optional)

  • ¼ bunch spinach
  • 1 cup chopped broccoli


  • Add 1 oz of flax seeds to 1/2 cup of water. Mix well. Wait for 10 minutes. Mix again.
  • The flax seeds- water will turn into gel consistency. Put in the fridge for a few hours or overnight.
  • Check the flax seeds - water gel. If it is too watery, drain the excess water.
  • Place the flax seeds gel in a blender, with the almonds and almond milk. Blend until desired consistency is reached.
  • Remove from blender, and place in a large saucepan, over medium heat.
  • Add one cup of chopped broccoli and spinach.
  • Cook and stir for 5 minutes. Do not boil.
  • Add a little more almond milk if you find the consistency too thick.
  • While cooking, add himalayan pink salt, black pepper, and chipotle to taste.
  • Remove from heat. Add the hemp seeds, 1 tbsp of coconut butter and mix. 
  • Place in a bowl. Add more himalayan pink salt, black pepper, and chipotle if needed. Your noatmeal detox recipe is ready!
  • For added nutrients, crunchiness and flavor, add 1 oz of your favorite fresh raw nuts or seeds.

  • No Veggies – Sweet Version – Most Popular:
    This is by far the most popular option, as the classic breakfast option to replace the traditional oatmeal porridge.
    Instead of the spices in the recipe below, use the following:
    ¼ tsp of vanilla extract, dash of cinnamon and stevia or pure monkfruit. Add salt to taste to balance the flavor. Many people like to also add fresh raw nuts and seeds just before serving.
  • No Veggies – Savory Version – 2nd Most Popular:
    To get a savory flavor, use the salt, pepper, and chipotle powder as shown in the recipe directions. If you don’t have candida concerns, add 1 tablespoon of unfortified nutritional yeast just before serving.
  • Flax seeds, ground vs. whole:
    When you consume whole flax seeds, they pass through the gut intact. In order for the body to better absorb their nutrients, you need to grind them. When you grind flax seeds, the exposure to oxygen overtime can make some nutrients break down and become rancid. For this reason it is ideal to buy whole seeds and grind them just before you make the recipe. As an alternative, if you do buy ground flax seeds, look at the expiration date and make sure they are fresh.
  • Veggies: Should I cook, sauté, steam or eat raw?
    The research suggests that certain nutrients may become more available by cooking. Other nutrients however, may get destroyed by heat.
    The option you choose of course, can also change the way the veggies taste.
    For this reason, we like to use a combination of raw, and lightly cooked veggies together. You can put some in the saucepan as you cook, and leave a few raw and add to the recipe just before serving.

Low Carbs Doesn’t Mean Low Energy

The recipe specifically includes different nutrients that boost your energy levels. We strategically used fast and slow acting ingredients, so you get both the quick energy boost with the sustained energy that may last for many hours as well.

The coconut butter has unique nutrients the body can quickly digest and utilize, so you feel the energy boost shortly after you eat the notemal. The energy from the nuts and seeds will come hours later.

Fiber & Gut Health

The importance of dietary fiber for overall health is well known, especially to promote intestinal regularity and healthy digestion. The average fiber intake in the US, however, is less than half of the recommended levels [1].

The daily value for fiber is 25 grams per day (based on a 2,000 calorie diet). This recipe provides you with 21 grams of fiber. No fiber supplements, no powders. Just natural whole foods.

The noatmeal detox recipe is high in soluble fiber, which can act as prebiotic, a food source for the healthy bacteria in the gut. This means that it can promote the growth of probiotic and contribute to better gut health [2].

Natural Cleansing & Detoxification

In addition to the soluble fiber, the recipe is also high in insoluble fiber.

Flax Seeds

Flaxseeds make a great source of both soluble and insoluble dietary fiber, and one of the best plant based sources of omega 3 fatty acid [5].

According to research, the oils, fibers and flax lignans in flaxseeds have many potential health benefits and may help to reduce the risk to develop cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, arthritis, osteoporosis, autoimmune and neurological disorders [6].

Why Soaking & Grinding

When you consume whole flax seeds, they pass through the gut intact. So you may not absorb all their useful nutrients. For this reason, a common traditional best practice is to soak the seeds with water and grind them before eating.

Nuts & Almonds

Almonds Noatmeal

Many studies suggest that nuts have nutritional characteristics that can benefit human health and prevent many diseases. When you introduce nuts into your diet on an ongoing basis, you significantly increase in the quality of the diet. Nuts are rich in essential fatty acids, protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals and bioactive compounds with antioxidant potential [7].

Unlike carbs that often cause a quick energy boost followed by a crash when the blood sugars drop, the energy you get from nuts and seeds in more subtle and can last much longer. For this reason, nuts play a key role in many low carb diets, as an alternative source of fuel.

Why Almonds

When we made the recipe, we tested different nuts and seeds. The nuts that our testers liked the most, were the almonds. Second place – pecans, third place – macadamia nuts (for the savory option).

As for the health benefits of almonds, out of the different options of nuts, they are well known for their balanced profile of fatty acids. So if you are looking to control the levels of omega 6 in your diet, but still enjoy the health benefits of nuts, almonds are an excellent choice. Almonds also make a great source of vitamin E. Just 1 oz of almonds provide you with 50% of the daily values.

Coconut Butter

Coconut Noatmeal

Coconut butter is the meat of the coconut after it goes through grinding process that turns the coconut meat into butter consistency. So you get both the coconut oil, and in addition, the other nutrients in the coconut meat.

The reason we included coconut butter as a part of the recipe, has to do with a few unique characteristic of coconut: energy, cleansing, antifungal, anti microbial, and flavor.

Coconut oil is well known for its antimicrobial and antifungal properties, and demonstrated significant antifungal activity against candida yeast and other pathogens [89].

Coconut oil is a rich source of medium-chain triglycerides, commonly known as MCT oils. These oils are different from most oils in the way the body digests them. The body can utilize the MCT oils much quicker to significantly boost the energy levels.

This is a well known use of coconut oil you can see in many low carbs dietary protocols such as keto diet, pre workout supplements, and as a way to improve exercise performance [10].

For this reason, many nutrition experts consider MCT oil as one of the best alternative energy sources to carbs.

Hemp Seeds

The are two reasons we recommend to include hemp seeds as a part of the noatmeal recipe.

The first reason is the nutrients in hemp seeds. The nutritional profile is simply exceptional. Similar to chia seeds, hemp seeds are one of the only plant sources of alpha-linolenic acid omega-3 fatty acid (ALA). Hemp seeds are also very high in easily to digest high quality protein [1112].

Just to give you an idea, when you eat 1 oz of hemp seeds (the amount in this recipe), you get:

  • 9 grams of protein.
  • 3 grams of omega 3.
  • Over 40% of your daily values or iron, magnesium, manganese and phosphorus.
  • Over 25% of your daily values of zinc, and B1.

And the carbs? less than 1 grams of net carbs.

The second reason we like hemp seeds, is their taste and texture. Hemp seeds bring a very mild nutty flavor and a fluffy texture to the recipe.


Broccoli Noatmeal

Broccoli is well known for its  high content of bioactive phytochemicals such as glucosinolates, phenolic compounds, vitamin C, and minerals. Many studies suggest that a diet high in broccoli may help to prevent cardiovascular diseases, different types of cancers and oxidative stress [13].

In addition to its nutrients and health benefits, we like to use broccoli for this recipe as its texture and flavor blend very well with the other ingredients. If you prefer other cruciferous vegetables, you may use them instead or in addition to the brocoli as well. Brussels sprouts also work very well in this recipe.

Common cruciferous vegetables include: cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, brussels sprouts.

The health benefits of cruciferous vegetables are well known and supported by many studies. Cruciferous vegetables contain unique nutrients and  phytochemicals that are suggested by the medical community to induce detoxification, stimulate the immune system and prevent oxidative stress [14].


Spinach Noatmeal

Spinach makes a great source of vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals and bioactives known to promote health. Due to its exceptional nutritional composition, many researchers consider spinach as a functional food. (Meaning its nutrients go beyond basic nutrition).

People usually find the taste of the meals to be pleasant. I personally enjoyed the meals and drinks and liked how they made me feel.

With that said, I did feel like I wouldn’t mind to have some extra protein with the meals. Nothing major, and to be expected. This is one of the core ideas behind the diet. To promote autophagy, the diet per design has to be low in protein.[5] Animal proteins can stimulate an increase in IGF-1, so this is why they are eliminated during the 5 day period.

I have done the fasting mimicking diet twice, about 6 months apart.
I decided to stop after day 3 both times because I didn’t want to lose more weight. My weight is at baseline is pretty low.

Overall, I was surprisingly not that hungry until day 3. It actually felt good to have a less full stomach. My meals tasted good, and I was happy and satisfied. Like I mentioned earlier, I felt I could have more protein, though.

Overall, I felt fair energy and was able to do yoga.  I didn’t feel up to heavy exertion.

My brain function and focus were actually great. I was focused on what to eat and not on other things in my life. It’s a relaxed state of mind I really like. This by itself, is one reason I want to do the ProLon diet again.

By the second day, I felt a little bit of a lull in brain function.  I struggled to find the energy for work a bit. Nothing major, though. I was still able to function well. My mood was fairly good, although on day 3 I had a mild headache which did affect my mood a bit.

FMD: Common Mistakes to Avoid & Tips

In the section below, I will try to address some of the top questions and mistakes I see people make.

During the fast

You will want to drink water or the FMD teas and skip caffeine and coffee if you can. One cup of black coffee is fine and may even help to promote autophagy further according to some evidence.[7

You can add in a bit of extra spices and herbs, but no more than a teaspoon total of salt, herbs, and spices. Try not to add salt if possible, as you don’t want to get your taste buds get used to salty foods. This can create a problem after the fast.

In general, since ProLon fast mimicking diet has been studied on humans, it is probably best to stick to the plan as closely as possible.

What to Eat After the Fasting Mimicking Diet

A common mistake I often see people make after a fast, is to eat a lot of calories, thinking that the body may need the extra foods to rebuild. This however, has proven to backfire. In fact, it is very important to gradually return to normal eating, starting with light meals. This can help your body to digest your foods, save you a lot of problems and can further augment your results after the five days of eating the ProLon diet.

Probiotics & Enzymes: Many people can benefit from taking digestive enzymes and probiotics with their meals a few weeks after the fast, to help the body digesting solid meals again.

Eat Clean: I can’t stress this enough:

Fasting Mimicking Diet Side Effects

I find that the side effects on the proLon diet depends on your starting point. In other word, what was your diet before. The cleaner and healthier, the better.

ProLon diet is actually well tolerated by most people. Common complaints reported in the clinical trial were fatigue, headache, and difficulty with concentration. With that said, these were mild and most people could continue with the diet.

In my case, by day three, I certainly had a headache. Nothing major, though. Keep in mind, this may be a sign that your body is eliminating toxic compounds. People usually find that the headache is temporary and goes away by day four.

Who Shouldn’t Do The Fast Mimicking Diet

The fasting mimicking diet is gluten free and lactose free.
With that said, it does have a few ingredients that some people may prefer not to consume:

  • Nuts & Soy Intolerance. The bars contain nuts, and there are small amounts of soy. So people with allergies or sensitivities to tree nuts or soy should probably not do the diet.
  • Vegans: FMD is plant based. But, the bars have honey, and the supplements capsules are made from gelatin.

Also, FMD is probably not for you if:

  • You are at a low body weight: considering that you are likely to lose more weight during the diet.
  • You have a medical condition or take medication: your body behaves differently during the fast, which can affect your condition or the way the medication works. Always speak with your doctor before you start the ProLon diet.
  • Pregnant & breastfeeding are times where you need to nourish your body, not fast.

My Final Thoughts

As you can see, the fasting mimicking diet has pros and cons and it is not for everyone.

I find the research and science behind it encouraging. I think the ProLon fast mimicking diet may be a really good options if your goals are:

In my longevity protocol for graceful aging, we looked into the benefits and pitfalls of two of the most powerful, most studied anti-aging dietary regimens: fasting and calorie restriction.

The research data on both sounds almost too good to be true.

We are not lab rats. There’s much more in our lives than running on a treadmill in a lab. With less calories or food, our brain eventually goes into “preservation” survival mode. When this happens, you may lack the needed motivation to thrive and reach your full potential. You may live longer, but, I doubt many people will find that type of life appealing.

Even if you can function, you really need to know what you are doing. Long term fasting or calorie restrictions can lead to serious nutritional deficiencies.

3. Check you screen time

With our phones now calculating our screen time, it’s easy to take a look at what applications we are spending the most time on. The iPhone goes as far as encouraging scheduling downtime away from your phone and setting app limits to help tame the addiction of utilizing certain apps.

Utilize the screen time functions on your smartphone in order to breakdown different app usage, how often you’ve gone to unlock your phone, and how many notifications you have received at different time intervals, to decipher where you may need to work harder to wean yourself away.

4. Switch to a simple mobile display

This is a great suggestion to prioritize and turn your smartphone back into a useful resource. Simply put the apps you find helpful (not social media apps) first. For example: navigation, maps, calendar, camera, weather, email, notes, etc. For everything else, including games and social media apps, banish these to the last page on your phone.

If you want to use these, your mind is going to have to work to find them! Another suggestion is to turn your phone into gray scale coloration, therefore your mind isn’t reinforced with bright and shiny, colorful apps.

(reason: that’s the minimum time it usually takes to change bad habits)

  1. Just woke up? do not look at your phone/email.  Start your day with expressing gratitude. Towards the people in your life, towards your family, your achievements, etc. A few minutes of meditation, light yoga or just a walk in the park would do,
  2. Prepare a list of tasks you would like to achieve for the upcoming week. Ideally these should reflect your entire life, work and personal, duty and also fun. Perhaps it’s also time to try something new you have never done before. Volunteering, check out that new yoga place around the corner, adopt a dog, or start out a cleanse.
  3. Cut the time spent on your smartphone. Ask yourself before you reach out and grab your phone/laptop – do I really need to do it right now?
  4. Journal about how you feel overall during this time. If you feel that social media may affect your mental health, writing your thoughts may give you the ability to understand your mindset through the process.
  5. Pretty day outside? Perhaps a great opportunity to enjoy nature, read a book in the park, or just have a great workout.

Despite all the advances in modern medicine, people are sicker than ever. In fact, almost 50% of the U.S. population use prescription drugs. If you think it’s only elderly people, think again. Almost 20% of children under age 12 years use prescription drugs.[1]

And, a big part of the problem is the standard american diet. So many studies have shown a link between modern diets to chronic disease, health issues, including depression and mental illnesses. All these processed foods, artificial chemicals and other toxins we call “foods” take a toll on our body. It’s a huge burden that our entire system constantly need to process every day. Ironically, processed foods lack essential nutrients are body needs to properly function .

So, as a first step, a week before you start the celery juice detox, remove the top toxins from your diet. In particular:

    • Processed foods & beverages
    • Refined sugars, in particular: high-fructose corn syrup (read the label of your “healthy” energy bars or drinks. The average American consumes 150 pounds of sugar in one year. Can you believe it? This means 3 pounds of sugar every week.
    • Proceed grains, cereals. Again, these are not healthy foods. Just look at the list of the ingredients and see how many of them are actually foods.
    • Fried foods
    • Processed or commercial meat. These poor animals! Not only they are often treated poorly and are kept in horrible conditions, they are also fed with a diet that contains hormones, antibiotics, and chemicals to make them grow quicker. Quicker growth means more money for these industries but, when you eat the meat, you also consume all these toxins.
    • Limit gluten and dairy. Most people can’t tolerate at least one of them. As a result, you may end up with inflammation in the gut and body. And easy way to tell is to limit them for a few weeks. If you have dairy or gluten sensitivity, expect to feel a big difference after you eliminate these.


  • Eat from the rainbow. Plenty of colorful fresh whole fruits, vegetables and dark leafy greens. Each color in plants represents a different plant pigment that offers different nutrients and antioxidants. As a good rule of thumb, vegetables and greens should take three quarters of your plate.
  • Fiber. Did you know that fiber can bind to certain toxins in the gut and also supports healthy bowel movements? Simply put, fiber is one of the best natural ingredients to detox your body! The fiber intake recommendations range from 19 grams to 38 grams per day.[2] On average, 30 grams for men and 25 grams for women (from whole foods, not supplements) is a great place to start.
    An easy way to boost your fiber intake: eat one medium avocado (13 grams fiber), and 1 oz of chia seeds soaked in water (10 grams fiber) everyday.

2. Eat celery a week before you drink celery juice

Celery juice tastes way better than whole celery, we know. With that said, you want to start and eat celery first, to see if you have a reaction to it. This safe approach can save you a lot of trouble, before you consume the fast acting concentrated juice form.

So, start and eat a few ribbed celery stalks for 2-3 days and see how you feel. Celery stalks with carrots are great healthy snacks. Use humus or salsa as a dip.

3. Address Constipation

The following tip is true for any detox or cleanse, not just the celery juice cleanse. If you experience constipation, it is absolutely essential you regulate your bowels before you start.

If your colon is congested or constipated, toxins my stay in your body longer. Even worse, some of the toxins may re-absorbed back into the circulation.

So easy to prevent. Some useful home remedies for constipation include:

  • Overnight colon cleanse (with apple cider vinegar, lemon, oxygen).
