Candida Diet Recipes : Best Staple Foods & Recipes For Candida Cleanse

Candida Cleanse Recipes

The main idea behind candida diet recipes is simple: you starve the yeast. You avoid foods that can feed candida.

This is far more important than eating foods that kill candida. According to research, the carbohydrates we eat from the diet are the primary and preferred nutrient sources for candida albicans yeast [1].

For this reason, most candida cleanse diet plans and menus restrict high carb foods. There is, however, a catch with this approach that can cause many challenges:

You have to make sure you replace the carbs with enough healthy fats and proteins so you still have the energy and nutrients to support your daily activities, emotional state, and body’s needs.

So you want to starve the yeast, but not yourself. We specifically address this important point in this guide and in all our candida diet recipes.

All our candida diet recipes are: healthy, vegan, vegetarian, keto, paleo friendly, and gluten free. They are all based on whole natural foods you can easily get at your local store.

An important note about the candida diet  & supplements

Based on the many comments and questions we get, here are 2 important things you should know:

Key Ingredients For Candida Recipes – Summary of Evidence

Candida Recipes : Starve The Yeast, But Not Yourself

Based on our 15+ years of experience with candida cleansing, here are the main reasons many people experience challenges with the candida diet.

We specifically address all of these in all our candida diet recipes.

  • Cut the carbs but…still consume too much carbs. The research data on this is very clear. Very often, eating carbs can make you want to eat more…carbs. It is a known vicious cycle you want to avoid.
  • Still consume foods that can feed candida yeast, such as dairy, gluten, alcohol.
  • Don’t eat enough calories, specifically don’t consume enough fats and proteins to replace the carbs.
  • Don’t consume enough fiber to support gut health, digestion and satiation.

The result: Many people find themselves constantly hungry, with low energy, feeling miserable. They don’t see enough benefits from the candida cleanse diet, and give up.

Candida Diet Recipes Plan : Find Your Staples

candida diet food list

To make the candida cleanse diet work, you need to find your staples. All you need is a few basic candida recipes that agree with your body, that you enjoy, and can easily make.

So you make your staple recipes every day, eat, repeat.
Until you get better.

Focus on candida diet recipes that have:

  • Enough calories.
  • High fat, high protein, high fiber content.
  • Foods that agree with your body.
  • How you feel after you eat these: energy, mood, and satiation.

According to research, fats, protein and fiber play a key role:

  • Fats and proteins have a positive effect on satiety and appetite. Fats appear to regulate appetite through several mechanisms including the release of appetite hormones [2, 3].
  • Fiber is also known to increase satiety after meals, decrease hunger, and promote gut health. This is very important considering that in many cases, the root cause and source of candida issues is in the gut [4, 5].

This surprises a lot of people, but one of the benefits of the candida diet is that you can eat a lot of healthy fats. High fat meals usually taste much better to most people, are more satisfying and make you feel full longer.

This also means that there’s no need to chase “healthier” carb foods such as grains, legumes, beans, quinoa, buckwheat or sprouted wheat breads that don’t taste good anyway.

A few popular add-ons:

  • Sparkling water:
If you like sparkling drinks, you can add ½ cup of pure sparkling spring water. A few studies suggest that sparkling water can have a satiating effect, and may also help with indigestion.[67]
The research data on these benefits, however, isn’t consistent. So you may want to see if adding sparkling water made any difference to you.
  • Need more energy but still want to avoid coffee?
Many of our members like to add 1 dropper of Dr. Group’s Ginseng Fuzion just before drinking, which includes adaptogenic herbs such as ashwagandha and ginseng. Besides its ability to naturally improve energy [8], Ginseng has demonstrated antifungal activity against Candida albicans in a few studies [910and is also well known for its ability to naturally boost the immune system function [11].

Dr. Minkoff’s Perfect Aminos Drink: Avoid The Candida-protein Catch-22

Main features: Support tissue repair including gut healing, promote energy, reduce cravings, prevent protein deficiencies.

Candida Recipes: Dr. Minkoff’s Perfect Aminos Drink
Many people with candida overgrowth also have poor digestion. After all, the source of the infection is almost always in the gut.

This often leads to a catch-22: In order to heal the damaged tissues caused by the candida overgrowth, you need to eat enough protein. But, if your digestion is compromised, your body may not be able to effectively digest and utilize the amino acids from the protein you eat. Hence the problem: how can you heal your gut if you can’t effectively digest and extract nutrients from your meals?

This is exactly where Dr. Minkoff’s Perfect Amino XP Powder can make a big difference when combined with the candida diet. After over 20 years of research, Dr. David Minkoff, M.D. developed a natural amino acids formula that was shown by research to have a 99% utilization rate. There are no sugars, no carbs, with no impact on blood sugar levels at all. Nothing here to feed candida!

In fact, Dr. Minkoff research showed the body can utilize this formula 3-6 times better than other proteins and even amino acids combinations. Simply put, your body makes no effort at all in order to digest and utilize the Perfect Amino formula. In contrast, other protein sources typically require a complex and significant digestive effort. Even for people with healthy gut function.

Quite remarkable research. In his practice, Dr. Minkoff often prescribed his amino acids formula to patients who suffer from impaired digestion and related conditions such as leaky gut, candida or other infections. It is where the body needs that healing support and tissue building the most. Ironically, in his research, Dr. Minkoff found most of his patients had very low levels of amino acids.

To use Dr. Minkoff’s Perfect Amino XP Powder, simply add 1 or 2 scoops in water on an empty stomach.

Avocado candida recipe

If you like the way avocados taste like, you may want to buy a few more. Fresh, ripe avocado is the perfect candida snack. You don’t need to refrigerate it, it has an exceptional nutritional profile, and the options to use it are endless.

A study of 26 healthy adults found that one-half an avocado consumed at lunch significantly reduced self-reported hunger and desire to eat, and increased satiation [12].

In addition to its high fiber content, versatile nutritional profile, health benefits, avocado is very low in sugars and net carbs. How low? an average size avocado has less than 3 grams of net carbs.

You can eat avocado as is, or for added flavor, add a few drops of fresh lemon or lime juice with himalayan salt to taste. Like a little more spice? add a little chipotle powder to the mix.

Feel like snacking more? use the avocado as a dip with celery and carrots instead of the unhealthy tortilla chips.

Raw Nuts & Seeds

nuts candida recipes

Fresh raw nuts and seeds (unsalted, unroasted) are excellent natural snacks for the candida diet. You can eat them by themselves, or with a salad.

A few important comments about nuts and seeds:

  • To improve digestion use raw nuts and seeds, and soak in water for a few hours or overnight before you eat.
  • To avoid mold contamination, make sure to get the nuts and seeds that are fresh from a trusted source. It is common to see low quality nuts and seeds at stores. Even at premium health stores. For this reason, if they do not taste good, look or smell weird, chances are they are not fresh.
  • Typical serving size: 1-2 oz.

Ideal nuts and seeds for the candida diet include almonds, brazil nuts, chia seeds, flax seeds, hazelnuts, hemp seeds, macadamia nuts, pecans, sunflower seeds, walnuts.

Pumpkin seeds are also known for their strong antiparasitic properties [1314].

Candida And Fruit

candida and fruit

We do not consider sugary fruits as staples for the candida diet. We do however, get many questions on this topic. So here’s our take on it.

Eating fruits while on the candida diet has always been a controversial topic. Since most fruits are high in sugars, and sugars feed candida, we can conclude that fruits can feed candida as well. Right?

According to research data, however, there’s not enough evidence.

Based on our experience, fruits consumption on the candida diet can be helpful for some people. How do you know?

  • If you eat a small piece of fruit in the morning, and feel great, energized, happy and satisfied, then you may want to continue to do so.
  • In case you don’t feel anything positive after eating the fruit, then feel free to avoid sugary fruits while on the candida diet.

If you consider eating fruits, a few guidelines:

  • Best fruits for the candida diet: fresh ripe berries. 2 cups in the morning (around 10 grams of net carbs) is a safe serving size.
  • Always eat fruits on an empty stomach, preferably in the morning.
  • We do not recommend fruits smoothies while on the candida diet.

To clarify – fatty fruits such as avocados are extremely low in sugars, and are allowed on the candida diet. In fact, they are one of the best foods to eat while on the candida diet.

Candida Diet Recipes Ingredients – Evidence

Below you will find a summary of the evidence and links to the published studies. While there are many additional benefits of course, we focused on the benefits for the candida cleanse.

Apple Cider Vinegar

apple cider vinegar candida diet

Apple cider vinegar on its raw unpasteurized form, is well known for its ability to naturally detox and cleanse the body. It is the only vinegar that is widely accepted as a candida friendly food.

According to research, apple cider vinegar demonstrated antifungal activity against Candida albicans as well as antibacterial action against E. coli, and Staphylococcus aureus. The research data suggests that apple cider vinegar has the ability to destroy the structural proteins and metabolic enzymes of the pathogens tested [1516, 17].

On its own, apple cider vinegar may not be the strongest candida killer. There are definitely more potent natural antifungal foods and herbs out there. For this reason it makes a great addition to candida recipes along with other natural antifungals.

Another important benefit of apple cider vinegar for the candida diet, is its ability to regulate blood sugar levels and promote satiation after a meal [18].

Dark Chocolate & Candida

Many people that experience strong sugar cravings during the candida cleanse, are surprised to learn that dark chocolate may be able to help.

One study had 16 men eat milk or dark chocolate. The researchers looked into the impact of chocolate to appetite. The study found that [19]:

Dark chocolate promotes satiety, lowers the desire to eat something sweet, and suppresses energy intake compared with milk chocolate.

This is exactly why chocolate can make such a big difference in the candida diet. This is also the reason that gives chocolate its bad rap. Most of the chocolate products you find at the store contain high amount of sugars, and low quality heavily processed cacao beans.

Chocolate and cacao are not the same. Chocolate is made from the beans and seeds of the cacao tree, together with other ingredients that may not be as healthy. Cacao, on its own, however, is very healthy and has been consumed for many centuries in its natural unprocessed form.

In fact, according to research, cacao has more phenolic antioxidants than most foods. Multiple studies suggest that cacao consumption may help to protect nerves from injury and inflammation, improve satiety, cognitive function, and mood [2021].

Due to these benefits, many health experts recommend to consume cacao on an ongoing basis. We recommended to use raw organic cacao powder as a part of the candida diet recipes.

Chia Seeds & Candida Recipes

Chia Seeds & Candida Recipes

There are a few reasons we consider chia seeds as a staple on the candida cleanse diet. The first, chia seeds are well known to promote satiation. A study that had 24 young women add chia seeds to their breakfast, concluded that chia seed consumption may induce short-term satiety in healthy individuals [22].

The second reason, is the nutritional profile of chia seeds. Chia seeds make an excellent source of alpha-linolenic acid omega-3 fatty acid (ALA), vegetable protein, dietary fiber, antioxidants, and important minerals. [23].

Chia seeds are high in soluble fiber, which can act as prebiotic, a food source for the healthy bacteria in the gut. This means that it can promote the growth of probiotics and contribute to better gut health [24].

When you put chia in water or other liquids, they form a gel within 5-10 minutes. This is a very popular way to make poudings, cakes, cookies, ice creams, crackers, pancakes recipes, and also to thicken smoothies and soups. Once in gel form, the body can digests the chia seeds without the need to blend.

Coconut Oil : Candida Diet Staple

Coconut Oil : Candida Diet Staple

Coconut oil is a true staple you see in many candida diet recipes that use oils. Many studies were able to support its antifungal activity against Candida albicans and other pathogens. According to the evidence, capric and lauric acids, two of the medium chain fatty acids in coconut oil, are the ones mainly responsible for its ability to kill candida [25, 26].

There’s another reason coconut oil makes such a great fit for the candida diet. Coconut oil is an effective alternative energy source to carbs.

This helps with one of the biggest challenges with the candida diet. You have to reduce your carbs as they tend to feed candida. As a result, many people don’t have the energy they used to have. This is where coconut oil can significantly help, as the body can quickly digest and use it to produce energy. Much easier than other fats. This is a well known use of coconut oil you can see in many low carbs dietary protocols such as keto diet, as well as in pre workout recipes.

The research data was able to validate this use as well. According to the evidence, the Medium-chain triglycerides in coconut oil (MCT oil), can increase exercise performance [27].

Natural Sweeteners For The Candida Diet

Stevia candida

Natural sweeteners can play a key role in the beginning of the candida diet. You may find you do not need them, however, as your taste buds get used to the high fat low carb meals. For this reason, it is best to use them in moderation and reduce as your taste preferences change.

So what are the best natural sweeteners for the candida diet?

  • Organic monkfruit, also known as Luo han guo.
  • Stevia (look for brands that specifically mention they remove the bitter aftertaste).
  • Xylitol from non-GMO corn or birch bark.

All of these options have very minimal impact on blood sugar levels. Xylitol actually demonstrated antifungal activity against Candida albicans in one study [28].

Taste wise, we find that every person’s preference may be different. Stevia seems to be the most popular one, although not everyone likes its taste.

We like to combine natural sweeteners with a little himalayan salt to balance the overall flavor of the recipe. Always make sure these sweeteners are 100% pure without any additional ingredients.

Top Tips From Our Members & FAQ

  • No Veggies – Sweet Version – Most Popular:
This is by far the most popular option, as the classic breakfast option to replace the traditional oatmeal porridge.
Instead of the spices in the recipe below, use the following:
¼ tsp of vanilla extract, dash of cinnamon and stevia or pure monkfruit. Add salt to taste to balance the flavor. Many people like to also add fresh raw nuts and seeds just before serving.
  • No Veggies – Savory Version – 2nd Most Popular:
To get a savory flavor, use the salt, pepper, and chipotle powder as shown in the recipe directions. If you don’t have candida concerns, add 1 tablespoon of unfortified nutritional yeast just before serving.
  • Flax seeds, ground vs. whole:
When you consume whole flax seeds, they pass through the gut intact. In order for the body to better absorb their nutrients, you need to grind them. When you grind flax seeds, the exposure to oxygen overtime can make some nutrients break down and become rancid. For this reason it is ideal to buy whole seeds and grind them just before you make the recipe. As an alternative, if you do buy ground flax seeds, look at the expiration date and make sure they are fresh.
  • Veggies: Should I cook, sauté, steam or eat raw?
The research suggests that certain nutrients may become more available by cooking. Other nutrients however, may get destroyed by heat.
The option you choose of course, can also change the way the veggies taste.
For this reason, we like to use a combination of raw, and lightly cooked veggies together. You can put some in the saucepan as you cook, and leave a few raw and add to the recipe just before serving.

Chocolate lovers: you can add 1 tablespoon of raw organic cacao powder to the sweet version of the recipe. You may also want to see our healthy, low carb chocolate mousse recipe.

The Nutrients In The Noatmeal Detox Recipe

Noatmeal Detox Recipe Nutrition Facts Label

Noatmeal Detox Recipe Benefits

There are many reasons recipes for low carb oatmeal alternatives are so popular. Whether it is the need to reduce carbs, eliminate gluten or other cereal grains, you still want to make sure you get enough nutrients, so you avoid deficiencies.

For this reason, when we developed the noatmeal detox recipe, we focused on both taste and nutrients. The nutritional profile is exceptional. We gave special considerations to key nutrients that often become lower on low carb diets.

Below is a summary of the main benefits, with links to the published studies when applicable.

Low Carbs Doesn’t Mean Low Energy

The recipe specifically includes different nutrients that boost your energy levels. We strategically used fast and slow acting ingredients, so you get both the quick energy boost with the sustained energy that may last for many hours as well.

The coconut butter has unique nutrients the body can quickly digest and utilize, so you feel the energy boost shortly after you eat the notemal. The energy from the nuts and seeds will come hours later.

Fiber & Gut Health

The importance of dietary fiber for overall health is well known, especially to promote intestinal regularity and healthy digestion. The average fiber intake in the US, however, is less than half of the recommended levels [1].

The daily value for fiber is 25 grams per day (based on a 2,000 calorie diet). This recipe provides you with 21 grams of fiber. No fiber supplements, no powders. Just natural whole foods.

The noatmeal detox recipe is high in soluble fiber, which can act as prebiotic, a food source for the healthy bacteria in the gut. This means that it can promote the growth of probiotic and contribute to better gut health [2].

Natural Cleansing & Detoxification

In addition to the soluble fiber, the recipe is also high in insoluble fiber.

Insoluble fiber doesn’t dissolve in water, and can pass through the gut largely intact [3]. This fiber adds bulk to the stool which can help to promote regular healthy bowel movement.

Think about insoluble fiber as rough brooms inside your colon that grabs accumulated waste buildup and toxins on their way out.

Reduce Inflammation

Both omega 6 and omega 3 fatty acids are essential and are needed to support good health. A growing number of evidence, however, suggests that excessive amounts of omega 6 fatty acids in the diet can lead to inflammatory, autoimmune, cardiovascular diseases, and may increase the risk to develop cancer.

According to research, western diets are deficient in omega-3 fatty acids, and have excessive amounts of omega-6 fatty acids. In comparison, human beings evolved on a diet with equal amounts of omega-6 to omega-3 essential fatty acids. In the average western diet, however, the amount of omega-6 is up to 15 times more than the omega-3 [4].

We addressed both concerns in the noatmeal detox recipe:

  1. Omega 3 : 9.4 grams (590% of your daily values).
  2. Omega 6: 13 grams (77% of your daily values).

Noatmeal Detox Recipe Ingredients : Summary Of Evidence

Flax Seeds

Flax Seeds Noatmeal

Flaxseeds make a great source of both soluble and insoluble dietary fiber, and one of the best plant based sources of omega 3 fatty acid [5].

According to research, the oils, fibers and flax lignans in flaxseeds have many potential health benefits and may help to reduce the risk to develop cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, arthritis, osteoporosis, autoimmune and neurological disorders [6].

Why Soaking & Grinding

When you consume whole flax seeds, they pass through the gut intact. So you may not absorb all their useful nutrients. For this reason, a common traditional best practice is to soak the seeds with water and grind them before eating.

Nuts & Almonds

Almonds Noatmeal

Many studies suggest that nuts have nutritional characteristics that can benefit human health and prevent many diseases. When you introduce nuts into your diet on an ongoing basis, you significantly increase in the quality of the diet. Nuts are rich in essential fatty acids, protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals and bioactive compounds with antioxidant potential [7].

Unlike carbs that often cause a quick energy boost followed by a crash when the blood sugars drop, the energy you get from nuts and seeds in more subtle and can last much longer. For this reason, nuts play a key role in many low carb diets, as an alternative source of fuel.

Why Almonds

When we made the recipe, we tested different nuts and seeds. The nuts that our testers liked the most, were the almonds. Second place – pecans, third place – macadamia nuts (for the savory option).

As for the health benefits of almonds, out of the different options of nuts, they are well known for their balanced profile of fatty acids. So if you are looking to control the levels of omega 6 in your diet, but still enjoy the health benefits of nuts, almonds are an excellent choice. Almonds also make a great source of vitamin E. Just 1 oz of almonds provide you with 50% of the daily values.

Coconut Butter

Coconut Noatmeal

Coconut butter is the meat of the coconut after it goes through grinding process that turns the coconut meat into butter consistency. So you get both the coconut oil, and in addition, the other nutrients in the coconut meat.

The reason we included coconut butter as a part of the recipe, has to do with a few unique characteristic of coconut: energy, cleansing, antifungal, anti microbial, and flavor.

Coconut oil is well known for its antimicrobial and antifungal properties, and demonstrated significant antifungal activity against candida yeast and other pathogens [89].

Coconut oil is a rich source of medium-chain triglycerides, commonly known as MCT oils. These oils are different from most oils in the way the body digests them. The body can utilize the MCT oils much quicker to significantly boost the energy levels.

This is a well known use of coconut oil you can see in many low carbs dietary protocols such as keto diet, pre workout supplements, and as a way to improve exercise performance [10].

For this reason, many nutrition experts consider MCT oil as one of the best alternative energy sources to carbs.

Hemp Seeds

Hemp Seeds Noatmeal

The are two reasons we recommend to include hemp seeds as a part of the noatmeal recipe.

The first reason is the nutrients in hemp seeds. The nutritional profile is simply exceptional. Similar to chia seeds, hemp seeds are one of the only plant sources of alpha-linolenic acid omega-3 fatty acid (ALA). Hemp seeds are also very high in easily to digest high quality protein [1112].

Just to give you an idea, when you eat 1 oz of hemp seeds (the amount in this recipe), you get:

  • 9 grams of protein.
  • 3 grams of omega 3.
  • Over 40% of your daily values or iron, magnesium, manganese and phosphorus.
  • Over 25% of your daily values of zinc, and B1.

And the carbs? less than 1 grams of net carbs.

The second reason we like hemp seeds, is their taste and texture. Hemp seeds bring a very mild nutty flavor and a fluffy texture to the recipe.

Broccoli

Broccoli Noatmeal

Broccoli is well known for its  high content of bioactive phytochemicals such as glucosinolates, phenolic compounds, vitamin C, and minerals. Many studies suggest that a diet high in broccoli may help to prevent cardiovascular diseases, different types of cancers and oxidative stress [13].

In addition to its nutrients and health benefits, we like to use broccoli for this recipe as its texture and flavor blend very well with the other ingredients. If you prefer other cruciferous vegetables, you may use them instead or in addition to the brocoli as well. Brussels sprouts also work very well in this recipe.

Common cruciferous vegetables include: cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, brussels sprouts.

The health benefits of cruciferous vegetables are well known and supported by many studies. Cruciferous vegetables contain unique nutrients and  phytochemicals that are suggested by the medical community to induce detoxification, stimulate the immune system and prevent oxidative stress [14].

Spinach

Spinach Noatmeal

Spinach makes a great source of vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals and bioactives known to promote health. Due to its exceptional nutritional composition, many researchers consider spinach as a functional food. (Meaning its nutrients go beyond basic nutrition).

According to research, spinach-derived phytochemicals and bioactives are able to prevent oxidative damage, modulate metabolism, inflammation, antioxidant defence, regulate blood sugar and lipids, and may help to curb food intake by inducing secretion of satiety hormones [15].

The Nutrients In The Liver Cleansing Juice

Even better, you want a juice that can also make you feel happy, energized, all fueled and ready to get the most out of your day!

This is exactly the purpose of this recipe. As you can see below, when you drink the liver cleansing juice, you provide your body a lot of nutrients. In fact, many of our members are so impressed with how this juice makes them feel, they drink it on an ongoing basis.

Liver cleansing juice Nutrition Facts

Liver cleansing juice Ingredients Analysis

Beet

beet Liver cleansing juice

Beetroot is a rich source of a class of antioxidants known as betalains. According to research, beetroot may have a protective effect against oxidative damage to the liver [1].

The health benefits of beetroot don’t stop here. Other studies suggest that beetroot can help to reduce blood pressure, inflammation, and promote healthy circulation and blood flow [2].

Endurance Athletes:  There is a growing number of evidence that beetroot juice may also improve performance. One study that had 9 competitive male cyclists consume beetroot juice, found that the juice enhance their performance [3].

Carrots

carrots Liver cleansing juice

Perhaps one of the most known non-fruit juice that actually taste great on its own, carrot juice offers a strong nutritional profile shown by research to benefit the liver.

According to research, carrots are rich in Retinoic acid that may have a  protective effect on the liver [4]. The data suggests that carrot juice can improve liver functions that may be benefit in cases of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease [5].

Celery

celery Liver cleansing juice

Celery is well known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. For this reason and due to its high availability, you can find celery in many body cleanse and detox recipes.

Specifically to the liver, the research data suggests that celery can regulate elevated liver enzymes (aspartate aminotransferase AST, alanine aminotransferase ALT, and alkaline phosphatase ALP) as well as blood lipids [6].

Ginger Root

ginger Liver cleansing juice

Ginger has a long history of use as a natural remedy for digestive issues such as constipation, bloating, indigestion, nausea and vomiting. When you cleanse your liver, you want to make sure your digestion system works well so it can effectively eliminate any toxins released from the liver during the cleanse.

Specifically to liver, the research data suggests that ginger can improve liver enzymes profile and other nonalcoholic fatty liver disease characteristics [7].

Lemon

lemon Liver cleansing juice

There are many reasons to include lemon or lime juice in your liver cleansing juice. The first reason, is that lemon juice can enhance the body’s overall ability to detox and cleanse. Naturally, safely and effectively.

As for the liver cleansing benefits of lemon juice, the research suggests that lemon juice can regulate elevated levels of serum ALT and AST liver enzymes as well as triacylglycerol and lipid peroxidation in the liver [8].

Spinach, Kale & Greens

spinach Liver cleansing juice

According to research, the antioxidant activity of spinach may offer an effective way to improve liver function, and even decrease liver damage done by oxidative stress [9].

Kale (and in fact the entire Brassica vegetables) contain unique nutrients and  phytochemicals that are suggested by the medical community to induce detoxification, stimulate the immune system and prevent oxidative stress. [10].

Juicing the brassica vegetables, however, may not taste so good in juices. Think about cabbage, collard greens, broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, kohlrabi…on a comical side, think about mustard greens… These options may taste much better when you eat them.

Out of the Brassica, kale offers a much better fit for the liver cleansing juice and blends well in this recipe.

If you are not a big fan of spinach or kale, you can use other leafy greens instead. The research data also supports the liver health promoting benefits of leafy greens in general. According to most findings, leafy greens can benefit liver health and modulate fatty acid composition in the liver [11].

Apples & Cloudy Apple Juice

apple juice Liver cleansing juice

Apples are well known for their many health benefits. Overall health, and more specifically, liver and gallbladder health.

The research data suggests that cloudy apple juice (juice with the pulp) can regulate various liver enzymes, and therefore may protect the liver from damage [12].

Is cloudy apple juice better than clear or pure juice?According to research, it is four times better. A pulish study that tested this exact question, found that cloudy apple juice contains four times more the concentration of polyphenols than the clear juice [13].

For this reason, you may want to keep the pulp when you make the apple juice.

More on apple juice and liver cleansing. In his best-selling book, The Amazing
Liver Cleanse, Andreas Moritz recommended to drink apple juice daily during the liver cleanse. According to Andreas:

Malic acid in apple juice does exceptionally well in dissolving
some of the stagnant bile and making the stones softer…The malic acid in the apple juice softens the gallstones and makes their passage through the bile ducts easy.

Heavy Metal Detox Smoothie: Powerful Recipe For The Best Cleanse

Heidi Moretti Author circleHeidi Moretti, MS, RD

Recipe | Nutrition Label | Research

Heavy metals are good if they are rock bands, but they have no place in our bodies!  All kidding aside, I am often surprised at how little the medical community speaks about heavy metals, because over the course of a lifetime, they can take a toll on the cardiovascular system, brain, nervous system, digestive tract, skin health, and liver function.

When I was in graduate school, the idea of mercury was obscure, and we only thought that people who ate swordfish had to worry about it.  Today, the concern for heavy metal toxicity has grown because of pollution in the oceans, in the air, and in the soils has grown exponentially across the globe.

In this article, I will share with you several evidence-based healthy, simple, natural and safe steps we can all take to begin to gently remove heavy metals from our body.

Heavy Metal Detox Smoothie Recipe

Below is my favorite heavy metal detox smoothie recipe, using a combination of foods and herbs known for their heavy metal detox abilities, such as moringa, chlorella, cilantro, probiotic foods, and selenium-rich foods.

I will also discuss the research behind the ingredients I use including different options to help you tailor the smoothie recipe to your own preferences.

Heavy Metal Detox Ingredients: Summary of Research

Below is a summary of the ingredients used in the recipe, and their main benefits for heavy metal detox.

  • Wild blueberries: (Anthocyanin)
Are rich in anthocyanin (purple pigment) known to protect the body from heavy metals, including neuroprotective benefits.
  • Moringa:
Different parts of the moringa plant are reported to have the ability to remove heavy metals from the body, and to reduce their oxidative stress.[1]
Moringa extract drops make it easier to use in smoothies and juices.
  • Brazil nut:  (Selenium)
One brazil nut (5 grams) provides over 150% of your daily value of selenium, an important mineral known to bind and detox heavy metals in the body.
  • Chlorella:
Has the ability to bind to heavy metals, and is also a concentrated source of nutrients, including chlorophyll, another potent natural detoxifier.
  • Cilantro:
Known ability to bind to heavy metals.
  • Chia seeds: (Fiber)
Very high in fiber to help eliminate heavy metals and promote healthy bowel movements.
  • Kombucha: (probiotics)
Probiotic many healing benefits also includes detox heavy metals (see research section below). I know this may sound like a strange combination, but kombucha actually taste good in this smoothie!
  • Almond milk: (Vitamin E)
Rich in vitamin E, which may help chelate lead.[2]
  • Kiwi: (Vitamin C)
Rich in vitamin C, which also may chelate lead, by itself or with vitamin E.[3]
  • Banana: (Fiber, taste)
Added due to its fiber content, and also to improve flavor and creaminess.

Chlorella for Heavy Metal Detox

Chlorella for Heavy Metal Detox

Chlorella is a powerful single-celled algae shown in studies to bind to toxins and heavy metals in water, and also inside our body.

According to research, chlorella acts like a sponge to heavy metals such as mercury and can “soak them up” so they can be eliminated with the stool.

In fact, several studies found that chlorella can bind to heavy metals in people who have silver fillings.  It may even remove mercury from nerve tissue by eliminating this harmful substance through the bowel movements and urine.  The benefits of chlorella aren’t just for mercury either; some evidence suggests it may be helpful in removing other dangerous heavy metals like cadmium from the body.

Not only does chlorella bind with toxic metals, it also provides healthy nutrients for the body like iron, chlorophyll, and protein. As a natural way to improve health, there isn’t much to lose by adding some chlorella into your daily life to gently help the body remove unwanted metals.

I use a daily dose of chlorella, at about 1 -3 tsp per day in my smoothie.  A little bit goes a long way!  Start with ½-1 tsp per day and work your way up.  If you add too much, you may experience some digestive side effects or a healing crisis. Remember, detox is all about restoring balance. It’s not a sprint, but rather a part of an ongoing healthy lifestyle.

Cilantro’s Powerful Effects Against Heavy Metals

Cilantro’s Powerful Effects Against Heavy Metals

Another easy step anyone can do to help the body clear heavy metals is to eat cilantro regularly.  This relative of parsley has the ability to safely remove heavy metals from the body too.

While we only have about a dozen case reports where cilantro has been used for heavy metal toxicity, all these cases showed impressive improvements.  The case reports even visualized a reduction in heavy metal content in the body by observing MRI’s. Animal studies also show that cilantro can safely remove lead from the body.

It is still not clear how exactly cilantro works to detox heavy metals, but since it’s safe and also delicious, this is an easy add-in to your daily meals.  In fact, I’m going to buy some more for dinner tonight!

A great way to have cilantro is to chop it up and add it to salads, add fresh cilantro as a condiment to soups, make a cilantro pesto, and add to your green smoothies.

Zinc & Selenium for Heavy Metal Detox

Zinc & Selenium for Heavy Metal Detox

Both zinc and selenium are essential minerals that can also naturally bind to heavy metals and safely remove them from the body.

Unfortunately, with selenium, our soils content affects how much selenium our food will have.  For example, the region I live in is very low in selenium, so if I am to eat local foods, I better consider taking selenium supplements routinely. People who work in agriculture are very aware of this because their livestock will die without enough selenium. For humans, an average daily dose of selenium is around 100-200 mcg.

The required amount of zinc per day varies, depending on your body size, the form it comes in your diet, and more.  For example, zinc in plant foods is poorly absorbed, while it is well absorbed from fish and meats. Also, many medications make zinc absorption poor, such as stomach medications, blood pressure pills and others.  In these cases, it is important to consider zinc supplementation. On average, a normal daily amount of zinc is around 10-15 mg.

As in many essential minerals, more is not always better. So no need to get overboard with zinc and selenium. Try to get your daily supply from whole foods such as oysters, wild salmon, and brazil nuts, and consider supplementation if needed.

Probiotic Foods & Heavy Metals

Probiotic Foods & Heavy Metals

Did you know that fermented foods like kombucha, sauerkraut, kefir, and kimchi can help remove heavy metals from the body too?

According to research, certain type of bacteria found in these foods have the ability to bind to toxic metals in the gut, so they can be eliminated with the stool.

I love fermented foods and won’t go a day without them in my diet.  I feel that anyone struggling with heavy metal toxicity symptoms should do the same.

While you can supplement probiotics too, the complexity of fermented foods supports many aspects of digestive health and provides healthy polyamines for the body. The only caution I would give here is to people who are sensitive to tyramines or need to avoid tyramines.

Detox Tea Ingredients

There are a number of medicinal herbs that can further improve the effectiveness of your detox tea, due to some unique properties in them.

It is always best to use fresh herbs in your tea you grow yourself or from a trusted source. You want to make sure you use high quality fresh herbs (ideally organic or wildcrafted) that are well suitable for the exact purpose of your cleansing and detoxifying goals.

Getting fresh cleansing herbs, however, is not always possible. Since many teas you buy at the store may be months and even years old, a good alternative is liquid tinctures that can preserve the freshness and potency of the herbs.

Weight Loss Detox Tea : Top Tips From Our Members

Weight Loss Detox Tea : Iced Tea Version

The detox tea also tastes great when it is cold. This can help to hydrate your body during summer, as well as a healthy alternative to sugary beverages and sodas.

A popular effective way to make the cold version of the detox tea:

  1. Place the detox tea in a mason jar or other glass container.
  2. Add 32 ounces (about 1 liter) of cool water.
  3. Store in the refrigerator for 2-3 days.
  4. If you have digestive issues such as bloating or gas, add 1 tablespoon of raw unpasteurized apple cider vinegar.
  5. You may add 2-3 more bags of organic green tea. No need to heat again, just place the green tea bags in the container.

Apple cider vinegar on its raw unpasteurized form, is well known to naturally detox and cleanse the body. According to research, apple cider vinegar has the ability to regulate blood sugar levels, promote satiation after a meal, regulate lipid metabolism in the liver, and support healthy kidneys and liver function [1,2,3].

If you have never tried to drink apple cider vinegar before, start with 1 teaspoon first in this recipe.

To Boost Energy & Manage Stress

Best Tea Detoxes For Weight Loss Ginseng

Many of our members like to add 1 dropper of Dr. Group’s Ginseng Fuzion just before they drink the tea, which includes the adaptogenic herbs ashwagandha and ginseng.

  • Ginseng is well known for its ability to naturally stimulate energy production in the muscles, improve fats metabolism, and reduce appetite [4,5.
  • Several studies found that ashwagandha can decrease body fat, increase lean muscle mass, support healthy body weight management and reduce stress and anxiety [6,7].

Keto or Low Carb Diet : Coconut Oil

Coconut Oil Best Tea Detoxes For Weight Loss

If you follow a low carb, paleo or keto diet, you may want to add 1 tablespoon of raw extra virgin coconut oil to the detox tea, just before you drink it. According to research, the body can quickly digest and use the coconut oil to produce energy. Taken before a workout, some evidence suggests that the MCT oils in coconut oil may also increase exercise performance [8].

If this is the first time you have coconut oil as a part of a drink, start with 1 teaspoon first in this recipe.

Detox Tea & Turmeric

Detox Tea & Turmeric

While this may sound surprising, a lot of our members also like to add ¼ teaspoon of turmeric powder to the hot detox tea recipe.

Turmeric for weight loss?

Multiple studies found that Curcumin, the main active compound of turmeric can reduce inflammation in the body, detox and cleanse the liver and kidneys [9,10,11].

Due to curcumin’s potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, many researchers also believe it may indirectly influence weight management as well [12,13].

Turmeric has a very distinct taste that not everyone likes. For this reason, if you are not a big fan of the way turmeric tastes, you may want to not include it as a part of this recipe.

If on the other hand, you like turmeric, you may want to also combine it with black pepper. According to research, piperine, the major active component in black pepper, can enhance the bioavailability of curcumin. This combination has a long traditional use that is also backed up by science. According to one study, piperine increased the bioavailability of curcumin by 2000%. [14].

Best Tea Detoxes For Weight Loss : Main Ingredients

Green Tea Weight Loss

best tea detoxes for weight loss green tea

Main benefits: promotes fat loss, suppresses appetite.

There’s a good reason why the best tea detoxes for weight loss usually contain green tea. Multiple studies found that green tea can increase energy expenditure and fat oxidation at rest and during exercise, promote weight loss and improve insulin sensitivity [15, 16].

According to research, green tea weight loss benefits are due to two components in green tea: catechins polyphenols, and caffeine. The researchers believe that both the catechins and caffeine in green tea work in synergy together to decrease body weight more effectively than each of these alone [17,18,19].

For this reason, for best weight loss benefits, we prefer unprocessed green tea with naturally occurring caffeine, over decaffeinated green tea.

Additional evidence also suggests that green tea may be able to suppress the hunger hormone, ghrelin. This can be very beneficial, since when ghrelin is high, then you are hungrier [20,21].

If you prefer to drink oolong tea instead of green tea, the research data also suggests you may still get some weight loss benefits [22].
We recommend to stick with green tea though, as the number of evidence for its weight loss benefits is higher.

Ginger

Ginger best tea detoxes for weight loss

Main benefits: promotes weight loss, improves digestion, detoxes liver & kidneys.

Multiple studies suggest that ginger and its major constituents have the ability to reduce body weight, supress hunger, and improve glucose levels and insulin sensitivity [23,24,25,26].

Another reason you may find ginger as a key ingredient in many detox teas, is that ginger is well known as a natural traditional remedy for digestive issues such as constipation, bloating, excess gas, indigestion, nausea and vomiting [27].

Furthermore, ginger may also help to naturally detox and cleanse the kidneys and liver. According to research, ginger has the ability to protect kidneys from different toxins, regulate liver enzymes, control liver inflammation and reduce the risk to develop nonalcoholic fatty liver disease [28,29,30].

Lemon Juice

lemon juice best detox tea for weight loss

Main benefits: stimulates digestion, detoxes and cleanses the body.

Drinking warm water with lemon juice in the morning is an ancient ayurvedic practice to stimulate digestion and detox the body. According to research, lemon juice may also support the liver and kidneys [31,32].

Some evidence suggests that lemon polyphenols can modulate lipid metabolism and therefore may help to suppress body weight gain [33].
Most health experts and nutrition experts, however, do not consider lemon juice as an effective weight loss tool.

For this reason, the main reason we still recommend to include lemon juice as a part of the detox tea recipe, is due to its cleansing and detoxifying benefits.

Cayenne Pepper

Cayenne Pepper Best Tea Detoxes For Weight Loss

Main benefits: boosts metabolism, suppresses appetite.

Multiple studies suggest that capsaicin, the active components responsible for the spiciness of cayenne pepper, has the potential to boost metabolism, increase thermogenesis and lipid oxidation, suppress appetite, and boost the metabolism [34,35,36,37].

In this detox tea recipe, however, we have cayenne pepper as an optional ingredient. The reason is that not everyone can tolerate cayenne pepper in a drink.

A lot of people do enjoy the cayenne kick flavor. Quite a few people, however, experience stomach pain after they add cayenne pepper to the detox tea. For this reason, if you want to try the cayenne pepper option, start with just a dash to see if you can tolerate the cayenne on an empty stomach.

Goji Berries

best detox tea for weight loss goji berries

Main benefits: detoxes and cleanse liver & kidneys, supports healthy weight loss and vision, anti-aging.

Goji berries or wolfberries (Lycium barbarum) are ones of the best known and admired berries in the traditional chinese medicine. According to the evidence, for more than 2000 years, goji berries have been used to detox and cleanse the liver and kidneys, control weight, support healthy vision and promote anti-aging [38].

Modern science found that the active polysaccharides in goji berries have promising potential health benefits including anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, anti-fatigue, anti-diabetic, antiviral and others. For this reason, you may see more and more studies that evaluate the therapeutic and health-promoting effects of goji berries [39].

In traditional chinese medicine, tea is one of the most preferred carriers of goji berries. In addition to their health benefits, in this detox tea, goji berries add natural sweetness despite being very low in sugar content.

For this reason, we always recommend to stick with homemade guacamole recipes you make. Especially considering how easy it is to make.

Liver Detox Tea : Best Recipe For Liver Cleanse You Can Make At Home

best teas for detoxing liver

As a part of our liver cleanse protocol, we spent a lot of time researching for the best liver detox tea remedies and recipes. We looked into historical traditional use, modern research data, reviews, benefits and side effects.

The liver detox tea evidence based recipe below offers a great natural way to support your liver and gallbladder health. We focused on safe and effective ingredients you can easily find at your local store.

We hope this recipe and review will help you in your journey for a safe effective and happy cleanse.

Liver Detox Tea Ingredients : Summary Of Evidence

Quick links: Recipe, side effects, benefits.

What Is The Best Tea To Detox The Liver?

Most liver detox tea products you get at the store, include a combination of common liver herbs, especially the top liver cleansing herbs: milk thistle seed, chanca piedra, borotutu bark, greater celandine, chicory root, dandelion root, turmeric, peppermint, and others.

Are these liver detox tea a good and safe option to cleanse your liver? Not exactly. Not always.

Liver Detox Tea Side Effects

Safety wise, there are reports of side effects and issues. The medical literature report cases of patients that had liver toxicity after they consumed liver detox teas. Moreover, many liver detox teas contain ingredients that have very little research on their effectiveness for liver cleansing, or safety in general. Other contain problematic ingredients that can cause stress to the liver.

Other reviews mention side effects such as digestive issues, diarrhea, excess gas, bloating and headaches. While a few practitioners explain these as temporary liver detox symptoms, we do not believe these discomforts are necessary. In our experience, you do not need to feel bad before you feel good.

The first key takeaway: if you consider to use a liver cleanse tea, get it from a trusted safe source, ideally that is specialized in cleansing.

Liver Detox Tea Benefits

As a part of our liver cleanse protocol, we tested a large number of liver herbs. The results have not being consistent. This is very common when it comes to natural herbs, since there are many factors that can impact the potency of the herbs. The origin of the herbs, their freshness, harvesting time, and many other factors can all impact the concentration of the active ingredients and effectiveness of the herbs.

In our testing, we didn’t see a big difference in the cleanse results after we used liver detox tea products. Liver herb extracts usually work better. The only exception was when we used fresh organic liver herbs. We literally took these from the ground and made a tea a day after. Fresh liver herbs, however, are usually not available to most people.

Liver Detox Tea Recipe

The liver detox tea recipe below offers a great natural way to support your liver and gallbladder health. We focused on safe and effective ingredients you can easily find at your local store.

Considering that most liver cleanse drinks are cold, many people prefer to also drink something hot during the liver cleanse, especially in the winter or as a healthy alternative to other hot beverages.

Liver Detox Tea : Top Tips From Our Members

  • Cinnamon & Clove:
Both choices show in studies potential as a natural way to support liver health, with some concerns about cinnamon (See evidence below).
Taste wise, both add a very strong taste to the tea. Some people love the way they taste, others may not.
For this reason, if you usually don’t like the way cinnamon or clove taste, do not add them to the recipe. If you like to try, always start with very small serving size, and adjust based on the way the tea tastes.
  • Stevia vs. Honey:
Both options have evidence (see below) on safety and even effectiveness to promote liver health. We prefer stevia over honey, as it doesn’t have any calories or impact on blood sugar levels. If you choose honey, we recommend to prefer organic raw and local.

Liver Detox Tea : Summary Of Evidence

Ginger

ginger Liver Detox Tea

Ginger has a long history of use as a natural remedy for digestive issues such as constipation, bloating, indigestion, nausea and vomiting. When you cleanse your liver, you want to make sure your digestion system works well so it can effectively eliminate any toxins released from the liver during the cleanse.

Specifically to liver, the research data suggests that ginger can improve liver enzymes profile and other nonalcoholic fatty liver disease characteristics [1].

Lemon

lemon Liver Detox Tea

There are many reasons to include lemon in your liver cleanse tea, juice or in fact in any detox recipe you make. The first reason, is that lemon juice can enhance the body’s overall ability to detox and cleanse. Naturally, safely and effectively.

As for the liver detox benefits of lemon, the research suggests that lemon juice can regulate elevated levels of serum ALT and AST liver enzymes as well as triacylglycerol and lipid peroxidation in the liver [2].

Clove

clove liver cleanse tea

If you like the way cloves taste, you may want to include cloves in the liver detox tea. The research data suggests that Eugenol, one of clove’s main active ingredients, has a strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which can help to decrease oxidative stress and protect the liver against injury. [3].

Another reason to add clove to the liver detox tea, is that clove is well known for its antibacterial and antifungal properties, which may be helpful during the cleanse. [4].

Cinnamon : Good or Bad For The Liver?

Cinnamon liver detox tea

Taste wise, cinnamon compliments very well the flavor of clove. But is cinnamon a good option for the liver cleanse? The evidence in this case, is not conclusive.

Benefits

On one hand, cinnamon comes with a very long history of traditional use that is also supported by modern research. The data suggests that cinnamon may have therapeutic benefits on lipid profile, liver enzymes, insulin resistance in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease patients.  One study suggests that taking 1500 mg cinnamon daily may help to improve nonalcoholic fatty liver characteristics.  [5].

Concerns

There are however, some concerns regarding potential liver toxicity of cinnamon. These concerns are linked to cinnamon’s active ingredient, coumarin. And here’s the challenge. The recommended safe daily intake of cinnamon is 0.1 mg/kg/day. For a 200 pounds male of female, this means 9 mg of cinnamon a day. Obviously, this means that most people who consume cinnamon easily exceed this amount.

A study that further tested this concern in the traditional Japanese herbal medicine (Kampo medicine), found no cases of abnormal liver function in patients that exceeded the recommended daily intake. [6].

The bottom line

Cinnamon is a very popular natural spice, that can add a lot of flavor to your recipes, along with health benefits.

If you like the way it tastes, you can continue to use cinnamon. You may want however, to take breaks just to be on a safe side. Another option for you to consider, is ceylon cinnamon. Also known as “true cinnamon”, this type of cinnamon has much less coumarin content compared to the cassia cinnamon type.

If you have concerns about your liver health, or do not like the taste of cinnamon, we do not see a reason to start adding it to your recipes. There are better and safer ways to detox and cleanse your liver.
At least until the medical community will conduct more studies on the question of cinnamon – liver toxicity.

Stevia

Stevia liver detox tea

Stevia is a natural sweetener that is made from the leaves of the plant species Stevia rebaudiana. The biggest benefit of stevia over honey, is that it has zero calories with very minimal impact of blood sugar levels.

For this reason, we usually prefer to use stevia over other sweeteners including honey. If you like the way stevia taste, stevia may be a very good option to sweeten your recipes.

As for the liver benefits of stevia, the research data suggest that stevia can prevent oxidative stress in the liver and may be useful for acute and chronic liver diseases. [7].
On that note, there is definitely a need for more studies to confirm such a strong claim. The evidence does suggest, however, the potential of stevia as a safe option.

A few comments about stevia:

  • When you use stevia, little goes a long way. Stevia is just very sweet. Just add a few drops and see how the tea tastes.
  • Always look for 100% pure stevia on the label. Many stevia products also contain other ingredients.
  • Some stevia products have a bitter aftertaste. It is best to choose a stevia product that removes the components that cause the bitter taste when they extract the stevia. You can usually see this on the label.

Honey

Honey liver detox tea

Not everyone likes stevia. We see it very clearly in our testing. If you are not happy with the way stevia taste, honey may offer a very good natural option to sweeten the liver detox tea.

While most people think of honey as a natural sweetener, Honey does have a long history of traditional use as medicine for many centuries [8].

Research data suggests that honey can increase the nitric oxide levels in the liver tissues, which can protect the liver against damage. [9].
The data also suggests that honey may also have a protective effect for diabetes, respiratory, gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, and nervous systems issues [10].

On that note, a quick reminder. 1 tablespoon of honey has 17 grams of sugars. Something to consider if this is a concern to you.

Low Carb Chocolate Mousse Detox Recipe : Benefits

When we developed the low carb chocolate mousse detox recipe, we focused on both taste and health benefits. Below are the main benefits, with links to the published studies when applicable.

Low Carbs Doesn’t Mean Low Energy

The low carb mousse recipe includes different nutrients that boost your energy levels. We strategically used fast and slow acting ingredients, so you get both the quick energy boost with the sustained energy that may last for many hours as well.

The coconut butter and cacao have unique nutrients the body can quickly digest and utilize, so you feel the energy boost shortly after you eat the mousse.

This is very important. The research data suggests that high intake of dietary fiber can significantly reduce the risk for developing certain gastrointestinal diseases such as gastroesophageal reflux disease, duodenal ulcer, diverticulitis, constipation, and hemorrhoids. A diet high in fiber may also reduce the risk to develop coronary heart disease, stroke, hypertension, diabetes, and obesity [2].

Furthermore, the low carb chocolate mousse is high in soluble fiber, which can act as prebiotic, a food source for the healthy bacteria in the gut. This means that it can promote the growth of probiotic and contribute to better gut health [3].

Natural Cleansing & Detoxification

All our detox recipes are specifically designed to help the body to naturally cleanse and detox. The low carb chocolate mousse recipe is no exception.

In addition to the soluble fiber, the recipe is also high in insoluble fiber.

Insoluble fiber doesn’t dissolve in water, and can pass through the gut largely intact [4]. This fiber adds bulk to the stool which can help to promote regular healthy bowel movement.

Think about insoluble fiber as rough brooms inside your colon that grabs accumulated waste buildup and toxins on their way out.

The recipe also includes natural antimicrobial and antifungal ingredients such as coconut oil and cinnamon, which can help they body to get rid of parasites, candida yeasts and other pathogens.

Inflammation: The Omega-3 / Omega-6 Fatty Acids Ratio

Both omega 6 and omega 3 fatty acids are essential and are needed to support good health. A growing number of evidence, however, suggests that excessive amounts of omega 6 fatty acids in the diet can lead to inflammatory, autoimmune, cardiovascular diseases, and may increase the risk to develop cancer.

According to research, western diets are deficient in omega-3 fatty acids, and have excessive amounts of omega-6 fatty acids. In comparison, human beings evolved on a diet with equal amounts of omega-6 to omega-3 essential fatty acids. In the average western diet, however, the amount of omega-6 is up to 15 times more than the omega-3.

Multiple studies suggest that proper omega-6/omega-3 ratio may be able to decrease risk for breast cancer, cardiovascular disease, suppress inflammation in patients with rheumatoid arthritis,  beneficial effect on patients with asthma [5].

We addressed both concerns in the low carb chocolate mousse recipe:

  1. Omega 3 : 8 grams (500% of your daily values).
  2. Omega 6: 11.5 grams (68% of your daily values).

The Ingredients In The Low Carb Chocolate Mousse

Below is a summary of the scientific evidence on the ingredient in the recipe.

Chia Seeds

Chia Seeds carb chocolate mousse

Chia seeds have a long history of traditional use for over 5,500 years, and were one of the most important staple foods in the the diet of Mayas and Aztecs [5].

The research data suggests that chia seeds are an excellent source of alpha-linolenic acid omega-3 fatty acid (ALA), vegetable protein, dietary fiber, antioxidants, and important minerals [6].

When you put chia in water or other liquids, they form a gel within 5-10 minutes. This is a very popular way to make pouding, mousse recipes, and also to thicken smoothies and soups. Once in gel form, the body can digests the chia seeds without the need to blend.

Chia seeds are also well known to promote satiation. A study that had 24 young women add chia seeds to their breakfast, concluded that chia seed consumption may induce short-term satiety in healthy individuals [7].

Coconut

Coconut low carb chocolate mousse

Coconut butter is the meat of the coconut after it goes through grinding process that turns the coconut meat into butter consistency. So you get both the coconut oil, and in addition, the other nutrients in the coconut meat.

The reason we included coconut butter as a part of the recipe, has to do with a few unique characteristic of coconut: cleansing, antifungal, anti microbial, energy, and flavor.

Cleansing, Antifungal, Antimicrobial

Coconut oil is well known for its antimicrobial and antifungal properties, and demonstrated significant antifungal activity against candida yeast and other pathogens [89].

Energy

Coconut oil is a rich source of medium-chain triglycerides, commonly known as MCT oils. These oils are different from most oils in the way the body digests them. The body can utilize the MCT oils much quicker to significantly boost the energy levels.

This is a well known use of coconut oil you can see in many low carbs dietary protocols such as keto diet, pre workout supplements, and as a way to improve exercise performance [10].

For this reason, many nutrition experts consider MCT oil as one of the best alternative energy sources to carbs.

Flavor & Texture

Flavor & texture wise, coconut butter adds a creamy mousse like texture, with a rich full coconut flavor into the recipe.

Cacao

For most people chocolate is a treat. For many people who try to stay healthy, however, chocolate may be one of these forbidden foods.

Good new. Chocolate may me good for you after all. What gives chocolate the bad rap, is that most of the chocolate products you find at the store, contain high amount of sugars, and low quality heavily processed cacao beans.

According to research, however, cacao has more phenolic antioxidants than most foods. Multiple studies suggest that cacao consumption may help to protect nerves from injury and inflammation, and improve satiety, cognitive function, and mood [1112].

Due to these benefits, many health experts recommend to consume cacao on an ongoing basis.

It is important to remember the difference between chocolate and cacao: chocolate is made from the beans and seeds of the cacao tree, together with other ingredients that may not be as healthy. Cacao, on the other hand, has been consumed for many centuries in its natural unprocessed form.

We recommended to use raw organic cacao powder as a part of this recipe.

Nuts : Hazelnuts

hazelnuts low carb chocolate mousse

Many studies suggest that nuts have nutritional characteristics that can benefit human health and prevent many diseases. When you introduce nuts into your diet on an ongoing basis, you significantly increase in the quality of the diet. Nuts are rich in essential fatty acids, protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals and bioactive compounds with antioxidant potential [13].

Unlike carbs that often cause a quick energy boost followed by a crash when the blood sugars drop, the energy you get from nuts and seeds in more subtle and can last much longer. For this reason, nuts play a key role in many low carb diets, as an alternative source of fuel.

Why hazelnuts?

When we made the low carb chocolate mousse, we tested different nuts and seeds. The combination that our testers liked the most, was the hazelnuts – coconut butter – cacao. Second place – pecans, third place – cashews.

As for the health benefits of hazelnuts, out of the different options of nuts, they have one of the best balance profile of fatty acids. So if you are looking to control the levels of omega 6 in your diet, but still enjoy the health benefits of nuts, hazelnuts are an excellent choice. Hazelnuts make a very good source of vitamin E, copper, magense, and other minerals.

Not surprisingly, the research data suggests that hazelnuts may improve inflammatory markers and reduce the risk to develop cardiovascular risk [14]. One study that tested the combination of hazelnuts and cacao, found that this combination improved the artery blood flow in smokers [15].

Hemp Seeds

Hemp Seeds

The are two reasons we recommend to include hemp seeds as a part of the low carb chocolate mousse recipe.

The first reason is the nutrients in hemp seeds. The nutritional profile is simply exceptional. Similar to chia seeds, hemp seeds are one of the only plant sources of alpha-linolenic acid omega-3 fatty acid (ALA). Hemp seeds are also very high in easily to digest high quality protein [16, 17].

You can blend them with all the ingredients or add them just before you eat the mousse.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon has a long traditional history of use as food (spice) and medicine. We put cinnamon as optional for this recipe, because not all people like cinnamon with their chocolate.

Besides the flavor, as far as the health benefits of cinnamon in the recipe:

  • Cleansing, antimicrobial, antifungal:
Multiple studies suggested that cinnamon may be effective against different types of pathogens, including MRSA bacteria, streptococcus mutans, mycoplasma hominis, and candida yeasts [18192021].
  • Healthy Sugar Levels:
Additional studies also suggest that cinnamon intake is associated with a statistically significant decrease in fasting glucose levels [22]
